My Rapture

Back in March I bought a monthlong light rail pass.

I spent the next few weeks walking the length of the light rail from Mesa to uptown Phoenix.

It was a wonderful adventure and I loved walking every minute of every mile.

Note this sign at 40th Street and Washington.

Someone had some wrong information. May 21st has come and gone. Oops!!

I guess that no one told them that the best "rapture" moments were to be found along the light rail.

I was there and it was a beautiful springtime in the Valley of the Sun.

P.S. Don't you love the old school Franks-A-Lot drive up stand!!

My next rapture will be a Chicago dog for lunch.

Do you remember when I told you that we stayed in camp during the arena show?

Here is the video I took while everyone was gone. We sat up at the end of the road hoping to hear or see some of the fireworks. While we were waiting I walked along each of the campsites on one side of the road and then turned and video taped across the street as I walked back. It was eerie quiet except for a few birds flying through. Turn the volume down if you don't want to hear me huffing and puffing as I am walking. At the end of the video you can hear fireworks off in the distance. At the end of the road, the guy with the shade umbrella is my husband.

Waiting Game

The last night at the Jamboree was spent beneath the shade canopy under the stars. It began to rain about 3:00 a.m. The trucks arrived by about 6:00 a.m. and the groups loaded everything in the rain. Despite the wet and the mud and confusion, they departed safely to Kings Dominion Amusement Park for the day.

The scouts went on ride after ride after ride and enjoyed every minute. It was a fun day. I went on two roller coasters and was done! I survived three weeks of boys scouts and the roller coasters were what finally did me in.

The next morning all twelve buses departed to different destinations and airports. In the afternoon, a line of thunderstorms hit the eastern coast and held up the groups needing to depart by 4:00 p.m. We traveled with Troop 2024 and Troop 2016. Our flight was delayed and did not depart until about 11:00 p.m. The flight took about five hours so by the time we arrived home we had waited about twelve hours. The boys were so very, very, well behaved. They visited the gift shops, ate, wandered around, checked the departure chart, etc etc. I admit to falling asleep sitting amongst the crowd. (Was I really snoring?) At the last minute we had to make a trek to a different gate and when we finally boarded, boy scouts filled the entire back half of the plane.

We were lucky and very glad to actually get home. (Troop 2008 and 2022 were sent to a hotel and will arrive home at 10:00 p.m. tonight--a day late.)

Both of the groups with us gathered together with their leaders and had a final good bye moment before going to the waiting families. They no doubt had mixed emotions and it showed as they seemed a bit hesitant and unsure while they greeted their parents.

All day long it had been amazing to watch the boys as a group arrive, move through the airport, wait and make adjustments without skipping a beat or causing trouble. My what changes have taken place in the last three weeks. They all stand a little taller and their confidence levels have increased.

They have matured tremendously and that is what the Jamboree experience is all about!!

There were many, many booths, displays, activities and ideas for everyone to enjoy. You could not see or do everything in a week. I walked through the Conservation Trail and spent about 2 hours completing ten stamps of the twenty possible presentations to earn the patch. The trail was located in a shady area and I really enjoyed everything I learned. Most of the booths had trinkets, patches or papers for participants. The NPS was really fun with old fashioned actors etc.

For lunch each day the boys can stop at any lunch kiosk anywhere at the Jamboree, turn in the day tab for a nice sack lunch. They then sit down wherever they want to eat. I also noticed a few naps taking place anywhere they could find a shady spot. HA!!

BrownSea Island is a reenactment of the first Scout Camp in England. I also met up with American Scouts along Thomas Road. They looked quite young for being over 100 years old.

Church on Sunday was a four mile round trip hike for the boys. There were about 50 Priests at the Sacrament Table and about 70 Deacons. (The pictures on shows half the church area.) Elder Hales spoke to the congregation. His talk was perfect. He encouraged the boys to be prepared. He told a story about a fellow pilot during WWII who did not bother to learn the emergency procedures for when his plane was hit because he would just fly in. Elder Hales said that later that pilot died because he did not have the automated response when he needed it. All of the Jamboree boys were great listeners and were commended by Elder Hales for being there and for learning to be prepared. I walked back to camp and enjoyed watching everyone in action along the way.

The LDS boys have been earning the George Albert Smith Award by completing certain requirements. They then went to the church display and could receive a special medallion. Many of the boys listened to Bill Burch while he carved his neckerchief slides. Bill always challenges the boys to live the scout oath and law and be good people. The hand carved faces on each slide are really special and something the boys truly treasure.

Boyd Thacker, an assistant scoutmaster in Troop 2024 also carves. Thanks Boyd for giving me a Bear slide to add to my collection.

Tuesday Take Down

Tuesday afternoon the groups began taking down their camps. They started with the gateways and then moved on to the tents and kitchens. (The covered awnings, tables and chairs were rented from a local company.) I felt guilty sitting in my chair and watching the huge effort. The reality of how many kids know how to work and those who just don't know how or want to lift a finger to help really sets in at this point.

Parents need to thank and rethank the Scoutmasters for their huge efforts and great sacrifices to make this all happen!!

The boys will not come home and say they had a "fun" time every minute.

Remember that the entire three weeks was an "experience" they will reflect on for years to come. The events included highs and lows for everyone. The entire trip is truly a metaphor of life. Your son will have learned many life skills that will give him confidence to face the future. Tell him you are proud of his great accomplishment.

Thanks for sharing your son with the Scout people.

The boys all repacked their bags and then had a slumber? party under the awnings. When we left about 7:00 pm they had a long ways to go and I was glad to be out of there. It was a huge mass of chaos as you can see from the pictures of each group. (Surprise, it rained in the night, so it will be interesting to see how well they did.)

Monty arose early to meet the trucks at 5:30 a.m. to go and load all of the equipment. The buses will follow and then the group will be off to Kings Dominion amusement and water park for the day.

I have included the four remaining gateways from earlier this week. I also took a picture of the Post Office where I spent a lot of time waiting to have my mail stamped with the official Jamboree cancellation stamps. (OK, I will have to admit that they had a great Women's bathroom, a cold drinking fountain along with a really friendly crowd.) The boxes in the center of the room were part of the Jamboree lost and found.

Jamboree Home Evening

Last night Elder Dahlquist, the former general YM's President came and visited each of our LDS troops and a few of the Traditional troops from GCC. He left a message with each groop and played his banjo. He is serving as the Commissioner to all of the Chaplains at the Jamboree. We really enjoyed the experience.
Troop 2005 who is all about safety orange--their color--invited everyone to come down and have orange soda ice cream floats. They were delicious and it was a perfect ending to the evening. Of course, the boys are all winding it up at this point; the group was really revved up when we left. Luckily curfew is at 10:00 p.m. and we all had walked miles and miles and miles yesterday and everyday. Rest assured that they went to bed and slept well last night.

Camp Sweet Camp

Here are a few pictures of camp life. While the boys went off to the arena show we "campsat" and kept an eye on everything. It was an eerie ghost town. While everyone was gone, I took a few pictures of patrol flags and patrol kitchen chore charts. Keep in mind that the boys are doing their own cooking and cleaning!! Ha!! There is quite a range. My husband was resting in one of the cleaner camps while I was snooping. I really felt guilty being in their homes without permission. I will admit that I looted a chicken salad lunch can and a nutrigrain bar from the leftover food pile in Troop 2022 for my dinner.

On the first day while camp was being set up, a couple of the boys came up to me with bewildered looks on their faces and wanted to know where their camp was. I pointed them in the right direction and then understood better why each Troop puts up a gateway. The unique entries help everyone to recognize who lives there and also helps the boys to find their way home. For the last two jamborees Grand Canyon Council has put up a western town. Some of the gateways even match the troop patches. We also have fencing that connects us all together.

P.S. This is the most friendly chatty environment I have ever been in!! For example, I sat in line at the Post Office yesterday for over an hour and met the nicest people from PA, CA, IL and more. (I only happened to have a $1 in my pocket so I bought one envelope with a scout stamp on it for 82 cents. My favorite souveneir!!)

Cool Day

Today was a beautiful day!! The rain last night settled the dust and the temperatures were far more tolerable--even nice!! I guess the boys had participated in a 5K run this morning. By the time we came back to camp, it was late afternoon and they were showing signs of being tired. The activities end at 5:00 p.m. and the boys were beginning to gather in camp. As with any camping trip, the best part about being there is just doing nothing for a few minutes. We enjoyed a nice visit with 2024 and their great scout leaders Lynn, Boyd and Paul. (Barry was out seeing the sights.)

Boys learn from just sitting around, visiting with the adults and listening to truths that are expressed as part of casual conversation. These boys were relaxing along with the rest of us. When we wanted to take their pictures, some of them chose to be suddenly asleep or making funny faces. Rest assured that they were in great spirits eating pbj sandwiches and snacking while comparing patches with one another.

Fire and Rain

It has been hot and humid and our Arizona crew is really not used to such weather. Fortunately, it rained this afternoon and the weather should be cooler for the next few days--relatively speaking. The boys are kicking into the patch trading frenzy.

There are no mothers around to pick up after these kids. No moms to wash dishes or do their laundry. Maybe you mothers will be appreciated a little more when they get home! They have all been so good to pick up their food and prepare it. They have to go and get their water down the road. They have all been great!!

Finally, I have two seconds to think. We have traveled at a rigorous pace since we left home on July 16th. It is amazing to see 12 busloads of 41 boys/leaders plus 6 extras-- LeSueurs, Hogles and photographers--minus the 11 bus drivers all travel without any (OK a few) problems. When you do the math our group numbered about 500 people. We have traversed through: Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington D.C. and Virginia. The Boston group caught up with us in New York City. The boys are camping at Fort A.P. Hill and I am here at the hotel in Doswell and this room is not much better than the campsites at the Jamboree. We really were spoiled while in Washington D.C. because we stayed at a luxurious hotel for three nights. One man asked me if the boys were working on their resort merit badge. Ha! We all needed the calm before the storm.

Speaking of storms, we had a huge tornadolike storm blow through D.C. on Sunday afternoon. Most of the boys were in museums or on their buses when it hit. Monty and I were on the beltway driving up to the Temple and the neighboring church building. We were preparing to stage a shuttle from the Metro for 6 LDS boys and a leader from a Traditional troop who wanted to attend church services. Their buses and schedule did not allow a way for them to get there without missing half the day. We had to make two trips from a Metro stop to get them to the church and we made it!! The forces of nature worked against us. The storm knocked out power to all of the traffic lights and our first choice for Metro stop. Trees were blown over all along the way. The boys had to take two different metro trains and the second one was delayed because of the storm. The determination of this group to get to church was a bold reminder of where we should be on Sundays.

Here is a brief breakdown of where we have been and what we have done the last 11 days:

Cleveland-
The boys visited the Kirtland Temple as a group and then each troop made the rounds to all of the sites. We were still adjusting to the time change and one another. Most kids were flying high; however, there were a few forlorn faces in the crowd. So many of the boys were with people they did not really even know at all. (It is now amazing to see them all blended together laughing and having fun together as if they had been friends forever. Just another reason for having this Jamboree experience.)
I helped Bromley, my nephew, with a cake for his birthday during breakfast. (Monty went on his first Jamboree with T.C. the week that Bromley was born. My how time flies.)
Palmyra-
Later that afternoon after seeing the Kirtland sites, the boys rode on the bus to the Palmyra area where we enjoyed a nice dinner at a hotel near the Erie Canal. We went to the Hill Cumorah Pageant that night. Of course the presentation was great, but I found the parking lot experience was surreal. We had protesters yelling and screaming out at the street and Mormon Tabernacle choir music on the loud speakers. I think many of the boys noticed too. We attended the last night of the Pageant and then witnessed the miracle of the blue chairs afterwards. The boys pitched in and helped pick up the three big truck loads of chairs. Wow!
Palmyra-
We attended church first thing in the morning and then the groups cycled through all of the sights including: The Grove, Grandin Museum, Hill Cumorah and the Smith Family Farm sites. I saw one or two shortlived moments of homesickness. (We have had very few problems.) I also witnessed many boys deep in thought and pondering what was happening to them and how they were feeling on this trip. Yes!
We ended the day at the Peter Whitmer Farm and then ate dinner at a hotel close by in Waterloo. (It was next door to a Wal Mart and the Scoutmasters were very happy about that. Just so you know, we the leaders, get up at 5:30 a.m. and go to bed after midnight if we are lucky. The boys are supposed to be in bed by 10:00 p.m. if we are lucky. Hopefully they are finally getting the message whether they like it or not. The people on the buses can catch a nap or two along the way. Those of us in the cars do the best that we can to keep up.)
New York City here we come-
First we needed to let the boys know that it is time to calm down, listen to their leaders and be obedient. Every bus received a stern talking to by Brother Hogle. He knows how to make them mind and if need be put the fear of going home out to them if they did not conform. It worked and we saw marked improvement in how each group functioned loading and unloading the bus, moving through their activities and bonding as individual groups. Remember that this is normal and all part of the Jamboree experience.
Cooperstown-
I actually went in to see the museum and I really enjoyed it. I had been there before about 12 years ago. The lovely town and museum are well worth the visit. Monty slept in the car at the far parking lot. Afterwards we received box lunches that included sparkling water. Do you know what happens when you combine warm sparkling water and boy scouts? Kapow--explosions everywhere including me!! Oh well it cooled us off and cleaned our clothes.
New York City-
ARRRRGgh!! Rush hour in the big apple was crazy. We tried to get a few things bought for our grandkids and then headed back to NJ to our hotel. The boys straggled in through the evening and now have a better understanding of city life. They turned in their dirty laundry and went to bed.
New York City-
We rode one of the buses into the city and then went our own direction. The boys went to the Intrepid, Empire State Building, Times Square and other NYC sites. I took a cab to see the Guggenheim Museum, The City of New York Museum, the Central Park Conservatory Garden and then I walked over to meet the boys on the west side of the park. Initially I could not find the group and I laughed to think that here I was in Central Park with no money and no phone. I asked a man sitting at a park bench to make a phone call for me. I was just over the trees away from the lunch site and in no time reunited with my husband and many friends. In the afternoon we went to the UN Building with one of the groups. (The vibes from that place were mixed. Many conversations and opinions took place amongst the leaders later that evening.)
The laundry was returned but we had chaos amongst the ranks. Their were many, many items missing. The people who did not mark their clothes as instructed were hit hard. We had many "Law and Order" moments as leaders searched bags and matched up clothes to boys. Amazingly, most of the lost items were flushed out from their own bags. I have carted around a lost and found bag ever since and it is dwindling. Sadly, there are a few shirts and pants missing and we will deal with trying to replace them tomorrow.
The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island-
We rode the ferry boat around the harbor and never did get off as we looked for and found leaders to give out information. We have been the follow up people picking up the pieces literally and figuratively. The boys had a great time and are learning about humidity.
Valley Forge-
Each bus had a step on guide. After waving in the last bus, I went and watched the movie while Monty slept in the car. By about 4:00 p.m. when I returned to the car, Monty said he had slept awhile and then had answered phone calls. "Who called?" I asked.
His reply, "President Huber." (Our former stake president who calls everyone for their birthdays.)
My reply tinged with regret and a quick kiss, "Happy birthday dear. I am so sorry I forgot until now!!"
So for his 55th birthday he celebrated with boy scouts.
We all went to Old Country Buffet for dinner and the boys had a relatively calm evening after a long day. We ran leaders around to Wal Mart, etc. and had a typically hectic evening after a long day.
Philadelphia-
The boys and buses went off to join guides for a walking tour of the Philadelphia historic district including: The Constitution Center, Liberty Bell, Independence Hall etc. We picked up my brother Kent from Troop 2016 and ditched out to get a Philly Cheese Steak from famous Geno's.  Yum!! It was really good. Kent took back 3 sandwiches to his other leaders. Geno's is across the street from Pat's Philly Cheese Steak. Geno's is the home of freedom frys and signs that say, "You are in America. Order in English."
Many of the groups stopped at the Art Museum on the way out of town to make a run up the Rocky steps. It is funny to think that many of the leaders were in junior high, the same ages as their boys, when Rocky was big. The boys did not really understand what was happening but the leaders had a great time.
Amish Country-
Oh what a feast we enjoyed at the Amish restaurant, Plain and Fancy, located at Bird-In-Hand. This was a terrific day!!
Gettysburg-
There is a new visitor's center at the battlefield and the movie and cyclorama presentations were touching and emotional. The boys had step on guides to see the battlefield. We picked up a prescription and drove back to the previous night's hotel to pick up a lost camera. We also found a hat and a T-shirt--more items for my lost and found. I spent the lunch hour cycling about 6 troops, 250 people, through General Pickett's a small buffet restaurant. The food was great and the staff was accustomed to large groups and we all worked well together. Once again we all worked together for an orchestrated effort to make it happen without anyone waiting for long in the heat.
Fort McHenry-
We joined some of the groups that went to see Fort McHenry while the others went on to Arlington. This Baltimore sight is worn and tired.  We sat in a small hot room to watch an old movie about the events that occurred here. It looked like they were building a new center to upgrade the experience. We did witness some of our boys help take down the flag.
Washington D.C.-
After two hours of driving on the freeway to cover about 40 miles, we arrived at the Westin Arlington. AH!! Monty and I finally had two seconds to have dinner together at P.F. Changs without kids. It was HOT out today!!!
Washington D.C.-
We missed Arlington, but all of the groups went for the wreath laying either yesterday or this morning. Monty drove Fuji's wife to the airport. I rode the Metro to see the Smithsonian Natural History Museum and then met Troop 2022 to visit the National Archives, eat lunch at the Reagan Building food court, Holocaust Museum, Ford's Theater (great nap during the presentation) and then return to the Smithsonian Muesum of American History. Monty met me there and we rode with that group to dinner. We left them to finish dinner while we rode back to the hotel on the Metro and then we walked across the street to eat a hamburger.
Mount Vernon-
We had a non denominational church service on the lawn of Mount Vernon with all of the groups. Afterwards we saw the house and a few of the sights. It is interesting to see that some kids want to see everything and others could care less about the site. We just try to walk a time balance and keep everyone happy. Mount Vernon was providing lunches for the groups and there was a time mix up. Monty and I staged the 12 groups to hand out lunches without having a mob scene. We sent each group to it's own corner and then systematically ran them through the lunch line then outside. We group by troop number and or color and it makes it easy.
LDS Temple and church service-
The power was out so they could not go into the Visitor Center. You can scroll to the top to read about our adventure on Sunday. The service was very nice and included an amazing musical number from boys from Troop 2008. I rode to the hotel with Troop 2016 and Monty and LeSueurs shuttled our 7 extra people.
Capitol Building-
We missed out because we were setting up for the Jamboree entrance.
Ruther Glen truck stop-
To enter the Jamboree efficiently, the group of buses and the 3 trucks with their gear--which was loaded two weeks ago and shipped by rail--needed to travel together from this point. The sweetest little ladies at the truck stop had prepared 500 lunches and we all handed them out in an orderly fashion. The boys each had a restroom stop and then we sent them back to their buses to wait at the back end of the parking lot until time to go. Once again we had to stage the event to keep the kids from running crazy. Everyone listened and was very cooperative. Wow, what a difference 11 days can make. The groups said good bye to their bus drivers from cleveland. I think they were all sad to see each other go. The drivers always say that these boys are the best groups they have ever driven for.
Jamboree set up-
Twelve new campsites are up and running at Fort A.P. Hill. All seems to be going well. Glitches are expected and we are grateful that the weather has been cooler today. I am here at my campsite/hotel and we will run back and forth everyday to help with problems. Scott and Terri LeSueur are staying in the Jamboree site and will deal with that end of things. (They are in charge of everything and have worked hard for years to put it together.  We have taken turns handing out food and running the groups. We are all hot and tired.) Monty has gone to Wal mart for misc. items and then on to the jamboree to make deliveries and check on things. He will be back later to day.

FYI
(Each troop has four adults who each have specific responsibilities, four older boys known as green bar who have corresponding responsibilities and four patrols of eight boys. Each group is a total of 40 people so it makes it easy if everyone does his job. They each have a number and a color:
2005 safety orange,
2006 navy blue,
2007 royal blue,
2008 forest green,
2013 irish green,
2014 yellow,
2015 burnt orange,
2016 red,
2017 purple,
2022 brown,
2023 maroon,
2024 tan
Their bags and patches are those colors so it is easy to see where they are and who they are. Each person has a troop number and a personal number within that group 1 to 40 which they use to mark their belongings with.
Each group also has their own themed patch and gateway.
The four adult leaders with each group need to receive credit for ALL of THE HARD WORK with the boys. They are all terrific!! We have been so very impressed.

In 2005 Abby and I went on the Jamboree!! Monty was the Grand Canyon Council Committee Chairman. Abby came with the Scuba Staff group and I traveled along with the eight council troops--320 boy scouts. What and amazing and fun adventure!!

Translation: Party Girls!!

Sister A is now officially a 1st grader. She is a sweet oldest grandaughter and child. Back in March she collided with the wall, split open her lip and lost a baby tooth a few years early. Because she was such a trooper through it all, we went shopping for a few new spring outfits.

I think she likes pretty clothes!! She is a beautiful girl!!

We all had so much fun when we went camping at the ranch a few weeks ago.

When a birthday or special event comes around, Sister M. is very excited because she will be going to a "powty" with all the people she loves. She also likes to eat "smowties" her favorite candy and ride on the "twain" with Aunt Abby. Last week she went out to see her cousins and passed a "fowmuh's gowdun that was spwowtin."

A message from Lexi: Our new brother Hunt Thomas Hawkins weighed in at 8 lbs 7 oz and was finally born this morning, Friday, February 26th. He sure looks like he belongs to us. We are all glad that he is finally here on earth. The last few days while my mom and dad were at the hospital with baby Hunt, Cooper and I have been staying with Grandma and Grandpa. We had McDonalds for lunch yesterday and then later I threw it up all over the family room. My what excitement, thank goodness Aunt Abby was around to help me out. Everyone is feeling better now.

Today we had so much fun visiting our new brother and our mom and dad at the hospital. Cooper loved pushing on all of the buttons and gadgets. It is too bad that we did not get to stay as long as we had hoped--darn it. That Grandma was in such a big hurry to get us home for our cracker and ginger ale lunch and our naps.

They say that we are headed over to stay with Grandma Char and Grandpa Kent tomorrow. I think that my mom and dad will be home by Sunday. Life is good isn't it!!

Grandpa Boot

Our Grandpa Boot passed away at 4:40 pm on Tuesday November 24.

He was with Grandma and his four children after spending the day with most of his grandchildren and many other extended family members.

He died as a result of a bad fall outside the ward building on Sunday while on his way to church. On Monday evening he seemed to be fine as he said goodnight to Grandma right before his bedtime prayers. Sadly, he fell again during the night and never regained consciousness.

Grandma and Grandpa lived next door to our family for over eight years. He was our Bishop for five of those years. He was a faithful and true grandpa as he support us and our many family events.

We love you Grandpa. We will miss you.

Black Canyon Lake Campsite: Then and Now

In 1991, we went on a family campout to Black Canyon Lake.

Believe it or not, this was one of only three actual family campouts we ever made happen.
Please note that over the years we all camped separately with other groups-- scouts, girl's camp, hunting--but rarely with just our own family.

This camping spot was once a beautiful, hidden paradise filled with ferns and other lush foliage--a far cry from the dirt camping typically found in Arizona.

Many a scout camp has taken place in our favorite spot. It is now fenced off to protect it from man and beast. Sadly, the Rodeo fire burned much of the area in 2002.

Below is a picture of 53rd Ward Scout Camp in 1983.

A short hike--a mile or two--away is a small gravesite of 19th century supposed cattle rustlers who were hanged by other supposed cattle rustlers. Historians say the events were part of the renown Pleasant Valley War.

Some of our family visited this spot again while camping last July.

The fire destruction is evident.

We were a rag, tag bunch of campers doing the best we could during tough economic times back in 1991.

Hogle Family Scout Outing

Summer camp 2009 was a huge success.

We had a wonderful outing in Forest Lakes with the entire family—all 21+ of us. (Natalie and David announced that they would be adding to the family in February!)

We laughed, played, ate too much, sang songs and enjoyed the weather and the love.

We had quite the conglomeration of tents and trailers---note each family’s patrol sites in the pictures. Grandpa planned and cooked all of the meals.

The family reunion signs were posted to keep other campers away. That did not stop us from having a couple of visitors for dinner on Friday night.

Grandma and Grandpa set up on Tuesday; Evan and girls along with the Hawkins came on Wednesday; T.C. and his girls came on Wednesday evening; Lisa, Abby and Jeff showed up on Thursday afternoon; Jesse and the Beverly Hillbillies pulled in late Thursday night; and Lanny and Katie arrived on Friday.

My Amazing Parents!!

I think that anyone who knows my parents, Jesse and Ann Udall, will agree that they are two amazing people. At 83 and 75 years of age, they manage to run circles around the rest of us. They continually serve, love and pray for us and we will always be grateful for their many sacrifices in our behalf.

Last week they went off on a trip to Kirtland and Palmyra for a week. My mother called me on Sunday afternoon and said she was sitting outside the Smith family home in Palmyra and enjoying the lovely afternoon and setting. "My dad," she reported, "was prowling around in the Sacred Grove." No surprise there!!

When I offered to pick them up at the airport she said that they wanted to ride the light rail and to meet them at the last stop. I think you get the idea of what kind of people they are. I just wish I had half their energy.

Back in March our family met at ASU for a memory tour with my mom and dad.
While students at Arizona State College, they met each other at the LDS Institute which was then located on the north side of University. My dad graduated in 1953, they were married in 1954, I was born in 1955, my mom graduated in 1956 and the rest is history!! They had many wonderful friends and experiences during those years.

My mother lived in West Hall which is located just west of the current library. She said that the girls had to be in by a certain time in the evening. The guys and gals would all hang out in front and wait around until the last minute to say goodnight. Smooch!!

My mom is in the 2nd row and she is the first girl on the left. My Aunt Pauli Perkinson is the third girl from the left. My aunt may have helped set my parents up since she was friends with my mom first.

My dad was very involved in student government on campus and at the LDS Institute.

The east/west street at the bottom of the picture is Apache. The north/south street in the center is College and is labeled on the map as Cady Mall. Hayden Library is located today in the center of the picture about where the clump of trees are. The MU is now where the empty space is in the center. The football stadium pictured is has been replaced with a large parking garage often used for Gammage events.

In the picture below, my mother is on the back row and is third from the right. She is identified as Shirley Udall. I have always been proud that my mother pushed forward and graduated from college even after she was married and especially after she had a baby.

She said that she took a sewing class while she was pregnant and made maternity clothes. At the end of the semester they had a fashion show and all modeled their projects.

The picture on the left is from the 1954 ASU yearbook. It is a delightful picture of Shirley Ann Evans and Pauli Udall-- two young, single, Arizona girls-- obviously thrilled to be able to enjoy a rainy school day. Who would have thought that they would go on to be the wonderful aunts and moms that they are to all of us. Thanks Aunt Pauli for getting my parents together.

One of my life's most tender mercy was the birth of our first daughter, Natalie, on May 1, 1981. She has been practically perfect in every way since birth. She grew up with two older brothers and two younger brothers; a baby sister; and two frazzled parents. I can't believe that she survived her childhood!! She is a lovely wife and an amazing mom to her two kids.

You can see from the pictures that she has been a class act all of the way through.

Lanny and Katie were featured in the 2008 issue of the "Latter Day Bride" magazine.

Katie's sister, Brooke, missed all of the festivities but she made us famous for being the American Idol Wedding.

Katie is a beautiful bride in her one-of-a-kind wedding dress. She found a picture of a gown she loved in a magazine and then had it made by a local seamstress.

P.S. It is hanging up downstairs and I love to stop and look at the interesting construction details. Yes, such behavior is typical of someone who has spent way too much time in front of a sewing machine.

My two darling "little boys" are as handsome and naughty as they have always been!!
I think they turned out quite well; I am a proud, lucky mother.

No one knows what life has to offer until they have raised two boys and survived it. Make those boys really close in age-- less than two years--and you can ask for anything you want as a reward for a job well done.

For the last 13 years the west end of our family room has been a soaring brick wall that housed a fireplace, T.V., (broken) sound system, mantel and hearth.

Well, when I came home from the cannery last Tuesday, I found this. 6

This picture was taken during a visit to Mesa--judging by the ages of the children and their bare feet-- sometime in the spring or summer of 1928. At the time, Grandfather David K. Udall was the President of the newly dedicated Arizona Temple. He and his wife, Ella, were living in a home located on the south side of 1st Avenue one lot east of Mesa Drive.

The Udalls had driven over to Mesa from their large home at 336 East Palm Lane in Phoenix. This photo captures an image of a pleasant moment in the lives of a busy, young family.

One can sense the pride and optimism possessed by John H. as he looks over his children. He appears to be enjoying a brief respite from the demands of his work as the Federal Prohibition Director for the State of Arizona. Note that he was also serving as the Bishop of the Phoenix First Ward. Could the family be in Mesa for Stake Conference? The Phoenix/Mesa area was all part of the Maricopa Stake.

During this time period, John H. made an unsuccessful run for the Governor’s Office on the Republican ticket: Arizona in those days was a strong Democratic state. (In modern times, this picture would make an excellent campaign photo as it showed the candidate’s links to the past, present and future of the state.)

There is no doubt that Leah was happily involved with the daily chores of mothering her big family; after all, she loved her children more than life itself. Her Snowflake small town roots and her own shy ways were taxed by the “big city” life she now existed in. Could the fashionable hat and dress be an indication that she was trying very hard to fit into her new surroundings?

The children sitting and standing on the porch from left to right are: King, Ruth, Reed, Jan Nick, Earl, Josephine and Jesse. Three more children-- Sam, Idella and Pauli-- were yet to be born.

Nick, the oldest, was about fifteen years old and his next younger brother, King was about eleven years. Earl and Ruth were nine and eight respectively; Reed was six; Jan was four; and Jesse was a toddler of two. Finally, born just the year before--not long after the family’s arrival to the valley--the only true Phoenician, baby Josephine.

The Udall family had no idea of what future trials were in store for their family. The Great Depression and World War II would impact their lives over the next two decades. The natural progression of life would cause grandparents to pass on and it would also cause children to grow up and grow away: that is the plan.

So, on an afternoon in Mesa in 1928 this family’s gathering was photographed and for a brief moment of time they all had each other. The Udalls took pride in their heritage, they looked forward to the future and they were happy: and that too is part of the plan.

I love this picture as it shows the timelessness of family life. It is comforting to see parents and grandparents who love their children and know that it is part of my own legacy.

"I Will Go, I Will Do..." Stake Pioneer Trek

Last October my husband, Monty, was in charge of the
Kimball Stake Family Pioneer Handcart Trek.

I trekked with two sons, one daughter-in-law and one grandaughter. Another son came the last day and my husband was busy directing the trek. (Note that Monty made our handcart!!)

I am still in awe of the entire adventure!! It was more of a spiritual experience than we ever could have imagined. My wonderful husband and the huge group of helper people outdid themselves. We had an amazing time.

This is a copy of the summary of the event submitted for the Stake record.

On October 11th, 12th and 13th of 2007 the Kimball Stake held a family pioneer trek. Approximently four hundred family members attended this three-day activity near Forest Lakes, Arizona. We used 42 handcarts between seven companies (Wards) and the Bishops were the company leaders. Our youngest trekker was only 5 months old and the oldest was 76 years old with every age in-between. All participants wore pioneer clothing and prepared pioneer type foods for the journey. Trekkers were asked to place their personal items in five gallon buckets with lids that could also be used as camp stools. The handcarts were fully loaded when bedding, blankets and tarps were folded and tied down over the buckets. Each handcart also carried a water container.

The first day, the pioneers departed from Mesa in time to be on the trail by ten o’clock that morning for a day’s trek total of just over six miles. The saints encountered Indians on the way but found them to be friendly. After lunch on the trail, the pioneers really struggled to climb the difficult uphill stretch known as Rocky Ridge. Later, many of the saints suffered the loss of some of their family members who passed away from hardship. This was an emotional time for all, but they managed to push forward to Council Bluffs, the site of the first night’s camp. The families set up camp and prepared their evening meals. After dinner each Bishop held a fireside with his own company and bore testimony of our pioneer heritage and this great Gospel. The families were encouraged to then share family pioneer stories amongst themselves. As the companies were settling for the night, a member of our stake sang a medley of pioneer hymns. His beautiful tenor voice quietly echoed through the camps and added a lovely amen to the day’s events.

Friday morning after breakfast we all gathered for a morning devotional. Information for the day was given along with a spiritual thought. A powerful moment was experienced when we knelt as a Stake for morning prayer. Before dispersing, to everyone’s surprise, the US Cavalry came riding in on horseback carrying orders to recruit all of our men twelve years and older to march in the war against Mexico. They were issued a rifle (replica) and marched out of camp leaving their wives, sisters and mothers. Tears were shed as they all said goodbye to one another. Our Mormon Battalion marched down the road to a gathering spot. While there, President Shumway spoke to them about giving respect to woman, girls and children.
With the men and boys gone, the women were left behind to pull their carts by themselves. They first gathered together and listened to brief stories about four different pioneer women. Adjustments were then made and the women began their difficult task of pushing their handcarts to Zion. After a short distance, the women were blessed to have angels dressed in white appear from behind the trees to help them pull their carts down the hill. The angels quietly disappeared as each group was reunited with their men. The entire handcart company continued on to travel another six miles to the Salt Lake Valley, our second night’s camp.

Upon arriving at the Salt Lake Valley early that afternoon the pioneers all rested for a short time followed by a time of celebration with fun games, crafts and activities. The two-man buck saw contest, tug-of-war, square dancing, nail pounding, storytelling and some of the Prophet Joseph’s favorite games were just a few of the events. There was something for everyone and they all enjoyed the activities very much. After more than two hours, we stopped for our evening supper which was provided by the Stake. Following a blessing on the food, we all enjoyed a great dinner feast of BBQ beef with rolls, baked beans, coleslaw and cobbler for dessert. That evening we gathered our seats around a large campfire for a Stake fireside program conducted by President Brigham Young. We sang songs, had some special musical numbers and then ended with counsel and a spiritual message from our Kimball Stake President Clint Smith. Afterwards many lingered near the campfire and enjoyed chatting with one another as the fire died down. Others went back to their own camps and quietly visited or prepared for bed. Saturday morning the groups quickly packed and traveled about a mile back to their cars. They disassembled their carts and departed for home.

Our willing and obedient Stake members demonstrated great examples of camaraderie and charity with one another during this pioneer trek experience. They came prepared to have a wonderful adventure and we were all blessed with many spiritual moments along the way. This was a great activity and we feel that those who participated strengthened their testimonies and now have a better understanding of what our ancestors endured. We are grateful that there were no major accidents or illness and the weather was extremely pleasant. Many, many hands helped to make this event possible. Thanks to all that organized and participated in the Kimball Stake Family Pioneer Handcart Trek.

Needless to say, we were all exhausted and needed a break from life.

A trip to California to celebrate our wedding anniversary was just what the doctor ordered.

So off we went for a much needed and appreciated outing.

Downtown Disney for some more shopping
Grand Californian Lobby (I can't get enough of this hotel!! Monty took a nap while I took more pictures for my files.)
Napa Rose Restaurant (Fine dining with an open kitchen makes this restaurant Monty's favorite attraction at Disneyland.)

The next day, after sleeping in, we went to the Orange County Swap Meet. I cannot express to you how much I hate this place. Monty wandered for a few hours and I sat in the car and read more about how to use my camera. The entire day was not lost: The Crab Cooker was our lunch stop. Yippee!!

Featured Female Student-Athlete of the Week

Abigail Hogle CGCC Women's Volleyball

Personal: Abigail has earned a Varsity Letter in Volleyball while playing at Mesa High. She received 2nd Team All Region Honors and her team tied for 5th in State. Her Volleyball Team was National Runners Up for the NJCAA at Chandler-Gilbert CC. Also, at CGCC, her team was 1st in the ACCAC Conference. She plans to major in Physical Education and become the best PE teacher ever. She loves eating breakfast burritos with lots of Cholula Sauce from the Coyote Cafe with Ali and Jonathan.
